every type of muck known to man!

Dear Off Road Enthusiast,

Are you a Land Rover Owner do you want to put your Land Rover though it's paces on the terrain that it was built for?

Have you always wanted to drive your Land Rover off road into the woods, across baron lands  or in sand dunes in the Sahara Desert but were afraid that you would end up spinning your wheels endlessly in glop's of mud or getting stuck in soft sand?

Do you know what you would do if you were forced to cross a shallow river blocking your path?

If this excites you then I have written the perfect resource guide for you! It's called Off Road Adventures For The Land Rover Enthusiast.

Landrover Enthusiast

First of all, let me tell you how this guide came to be...

How I got involved
I have always wanted a Land Rover Discovery 2 300 TDI; however I thought that they were very expensive and always decided against it.

It was the early death at the end of 1996 of a work colleague who was due for retirement that propelled me to go for one. Life is too short.

My Land Rovers
Therefore in February 1997 I decided on a Discovery 2, 300TDI 1995 model. At this stage I had no intentions of going on any rugged off road adventures in my 4x4.

I started to buy LandRover Owners International magazine, and it was reading the stories in the magazine that I developed an interest in going off road and places far-off.

In May 2005 I had taken early retirement from my job. I also purchased a new Land Rover Discovery 3s (manual gearbox). The difference between the two Land Rovers is chalk and cheese. Again I had no intentions of going on any rugged off road adventures in my 4x4.

Land Rover Discovery 3

In fact, my Land Rover Discovery is sitting in my driveway right now... but it won't be on tarmac for long. I'm getting it ready for my next adventure!

The truly great thing about this Off Roading Resource Guide is that it's been compiled by someone who actually owns and loves driving Off Road.

Why Write This Off Roading Resource Guide?

I'm always asked what steps are required to prepare a vehicle for off roading, what you need to consider, where to go and a whole host of other questions. Actually, many questions are based on the same topics, so I thought why don't I start to write down all of my thoughts, insights, hints, tips and insider secrets! The good thing about this eBook is that it is written by someone who actually owns and loves driving the vehicle.

I wanted to share with other like minded off roaders and those who want to get into this exciting, adrenaline pumping past time... and get the most out of your vehicle so you too can have the terrific adventures and experiences too.

In Off Road Adventures For The Land Rover Enthusiast I am an active enthusiast who can tell you all about the features of this iconic off-road vehicle.

The Land Rover stable includes the following vehicles... Defender, Discovery, Freelander and Range Rover. They're all sound vehicles on the tarmac but spring to life when you take them off road, where they really come into their own. But what makes this iconic 4x4 vehicle stable so special.

Did you know that this exceptional vehicle has had more owner-manufacturers than practically any vehicle in history?

In the past the Land Rover has had many owners including British Aerospace, BMW, Ford and Jaguar. Currently it is owned by the Tata Motor Company of India. It actually originally EVOLVED from the Jeep as the first model Land Rover was constructed with a Jeep chassis.

Perhaps this is why it is such a remarkable vehicle. With each new owner came new innovations and features until we end up with the Land Rover of today which is based on some very solid and remarkable designs from as far back as the 1940's.

Back then vehicles were not really built with the idea of built-in obsolescence in mind. There was a shortage of steel and other materials so these vehicles had to be operative for as long as possible. It is this "atomic age" appreciation of value and durability that helps make this such a durable and also remarkably agile vehicle in the end. Land Rover

I have to say that it was the history and tradition behind the Land Rover's construction that ultimately convinced me that it was the off-road vehicle of choice!

Perhaps that is also why that if you attend a four wheel drive off-road training course or school you will probably find that they use Land Rovers as their teaching tool!

Let me tell you in my resource guide the following:

All about the editions of Land Rovers that have the permanent four wheel drive system

A discussion of why it is important for you to understand how the electronic traction control works on your Land Rover - some off-road vehicles do not have it all!

Where to find all of the older and newer operating manuals for all of the different makes and models of Land Rovers online

The importance of torque and traction when it comes to operating a Land Rover

Understanding gear ratios and how torque operates in first, second, third , fourth or fifth gear

What is the best default gear to use every time you need to move the vehicle from a stationary positon when off roading

An explanation of how each axle beneath your vehicle is sent power or "more pull" each time you change a gear

Why the Land Rover has such an advantage when it comes to driving in adverse conditions such as snow and ice, being on a wet road

Why a Land Rover is capable of climbing slippery slopes that normal cars can't!

Why the "center differential" on a Land Rover is so special when it comes to helping you navigate through adverse conditions

Why the Land Rover gear box is different than the standard ones you see on an ordinary two wheel drive vehicle

Why high ratio gears provide ideal on road balance between power, traction, speed and fuel economy

Why the low range gears are best to use if you are travelling in off-road conditions that are unusual in any way

An introduction to the  transfer gear box that is a feature of all Land Rovers that allows you to select high or low range gears

How to assess whether or not you should be driving with a range of high gears or low gears when using the transfer gear box

How to take your own driving abilities into account when you are selecting which gear is optimum for you to drive in

Why the Land Rover has developed such a reputation for having no nonsense off-road capabilities that make it one of the safest vehicles to drive

... and a lot more information about why the Land Rover is the one vehicle that you can always rely on in even the worst conditions to do exactly what it is that you want to do ...

Is A Land Rover Off Road Vehicle Right for You?

Land Rover

I knew that once I had my brand new Land Rover Discovery in the driveway that I had made the right choice of vehicle but I also realized, upon closer inspection, that unlike an ordinary car there was a little more to operating this wonderful piece of machinery. A Land Rover is a vehicle that has a bit of a double life... in fact you get the best of both worlds.

A Land Rover is great around town... you simply jump in
and go!

However if you want to take the vehicle off road through fields, streams and forests then you need to undertake a little preparation and planning.

When it comes of driving in unusual terrains you cannot afford to take your driving lightly, I tell you everything you need to know to prepare your off-road vehicle for adventure including ...

How to check your vehicle including the normal checks like the level of oil, engine coolant and pressure coolant

Why you should never set off into the wild without that spare wheel, torque wrench and jack in the back!

Why a hi-lift jack can be better to use than a standard jack for changing tires on a Land Rover, but only on some models! In others you need some slight modifications. Use a hi-lift jack in the wrong circumstances and you'll face a hefty repair bill.

Why it is crucial that you get your Land Rover serviced, including a brake check and brake fluid check before you go on a long trip

The best way to prepare your windshield before you go on a long mucky trek through the wild

Why it is best to travel with someone or travel with a group of other off-road adventurers

How to organize a "spotter" in your off-road adventuring group for maximum safety when you are transferring particularly rough terrain

Why you can't always rely on using a mobile phone in a wilderness situation

A checklist of the things that you will need to carry with you when going off road

Why a torch, shovel and large knife should be part of your Land Rover tool kit

Why you need to take the Land Rover out for a few test drives before you take it out in the wild

Why you need to make sure that you are not carrying too much weight on the back axle of your off-road vehicle

...and a lot more information about why you really need to pay attention to "Murphy's Law" - if anything can go wrong it will - before driving your Land Rover out into the wild.

I  had a very lucky escape when taking my Land Rover Discovery over rough terrain in Morocco... I got away with doing thousands of pounds worth of damage when I was traversing what is normally a very shallow stream. Land Rover

Well, that shallow stream didn't turn out to be so shallow... within yards I was up to the sills in water and the Discovery was leaning on one side closer to the water. Now while this might sound like a fun situation to get the blood and adrenaline pumping, it was very nearly an expensive repair... as well as a huge cost to get towed from some remote area in Morocco! Read the rest in my Special Cirque De Jaffar Bonus...

It's only by experience that you learn how to drive across terrain like this... but also having a guide to help you in situations like this, so you're briefed on what you need to do before entering the water I think is essential. Sure, I can't be with you on every expedition but my Off Roading Guide provides plenty of advice, hints and tips on how to navigate situations like this... in particular look out on page 38 you'll discover the right way to cross any water hazard.

My point is that reading my guide can help you avoid situations like this and help prevent disastrous situations that may incur huge repair bills to your Land Rover.

Are You Ready for the Perfect Land Rover Adventure?

Once I got my Land Rover Discovery, I realized that it was not quite like driving any other vehicle. First of all it is a lot bigger than most vehicles, could go nearly anywhere and it was also a lot more versatile.

Secondly, you have to be very sensible when driving one of these things and always anticipate what's up ahead. This way you can always take appropriate action in plenty of time.

However, along with this incredible versatility also came some complexities to operating the vehicle. Some of these, have to do with how the vehicle best functions on the road or in the wild and others have to do with the way you drive and operate it.

The bottom line is that despite what you see on some television advertisements about off-road vehicles there should be nothing reckless about driving your Land Rover!

I give you all of the general off-road operation and driving guidelines including -

How to assess a terrain that you are planning to drive in for risks

How to understand the approach angle, departure angle; break over angle and ramp angles of your vehicle!

How to determine how serious a hazard might be to your off-road adventure

How to operate your Land Rover so that it climbs and descends hills

How operating the axles changes the minute you stop driving in a straight line on a road and drive in more hilly conditions

Why the traction on the off-road tyres has so much to do with how the vehicle eventually operates

How to prevent the vehicle from sliding sideways - a common beginner's mistake when they first start learning about torque and operating the gears!

Key differences of driving your Land Rover off road to when it's on tarmac

How to navigate your Land Rover across a stream or river

How to make sure that your Land Rover is in the correct gear for the challenge in the train that is facing you

How to prevent the dreaded condition called "axle windup"

Why it is best to have a good GPS or map of the area you are about to traverse

How getting out of your vehicle and taking a simple walk ahead or having a "forward spotter" can prevent you from spending pointless hours waiting to be winched out of the mud

Why you really should be familiar with the dimensions of your vehicle and keep the driver's side of the vehicle as close to obstacles as you can while you are evading them at the same time

The best techniques to use to judge distances between you and the scenery

How to use the mirror on your vehicles to help you judge distances when going through rough terrain

How to spot off-road tracks and stick to them to keep your vehicle as safe as possible

Why it's good to avoid ruts in the road - ignore this and you may be calling for a winch

Why you should try to drive with one wheel on the hump in the center of the road and one wheel outside the center of the track for optimum safety

What kind of tracks you should check hills for before you start to ascend them

The best gear to use if you are climbing a very steep slippery hill

The best gears to use if you are climbing a hill using a manual or automatic Land Rover

What the terrain situations require that your axles should be in a "locked position"

How to ensure that your Land Rover's body is parallel with the slope of the hill so that it is weighted and equally distributed

How to park your Land Rover on a steep hill (if necessary)

What to do if your Land Rover gets stuck and stalls while descending a steep hill

Why you should never attempt to turn your Land Rover around while on a steep turn

How to deal with the limited vision that sometimes can come with having to drive your off-road vehicle in reverse

How to avoid the violent effects of a "steering kickback" while trying to drive in reverse

How it is possible to actually break your thumb if you are not careful driving a Land Rover in reverse!

Why you should never use the brakes when operating a Land Rover in reverse!

Why you absolutely need to know the position of the air intake and engine engine management system on your Land Rover before you attempt to drive it through any type of water or wet terrain... Remember my experience!

Why you should try not to drive the vehicle through water that is any more than axle deep

Ways that accurately can tell you how deep water is and also whether or not the bottom is going to be mucky or rocky

How to "drape" your Land Rover so water does not get into an engine while you are crossing a river or stream

How to create a "bow wave" when crossing water so that water will not enter the engine bay

How to use the "45 degree angle" theory of crossing a stream to prevent your engine from getting wet

How to pull your vehicle out of a deep river if you happen to get stuck

How to find a place where you can see how deep water is before crossing so that you never have to pull your vehicle out and then wait for it to drive out

How mud with a high water content can be absolutely lethal to the Land Rover Engine

How to be safer by deflating your tires slightly when driving through hazards like sand, snow, ice and mud

How to use a higher gear to prevent spinning wheels if you are encountering slush, sand and mud

How this simple twist of the steering wheel can help you regain traction if you lose it in a rut or on a hill

Why you should lock the wheels on ice or snow to avoid any spin outs

Why it is important not to press down on the accelerator when navigating the Land Rover through ice, snow and sand.

What situations require snow chains to be fitted

How to be sure that you do not damage your Land Rover if you do decide to use snow chains

... and everything else you need to know about the driving guidelines for the Land Rover in Off-Road terrain!
